How to design a great book cover

You are reading this article, which likely means that you have finished your writing task and are looking for a great cover design. An eye-catching book cover is one of the best marketing tools for any writer! The book cover is a very essential aspect and so it’s certainly worth investing some time in. Rather, it is one of the key areas that most self-published writers fall down on. As the cover is the first thing people will see, they would not be interested to peep inside if your work does not look great on the outside. That is why you need to have a design that grabs the attention of potential buyers. The book cover should portray an accurate idea of what your book is about. Let us have a look at some important tips in this regard-
·         Be Open-Minded- Try to be open minded. Try to think of more than one possible design concept. Rather than making a cover idea too detailed, try to keep it simple yet impressive. For example, if you want to see a woman and a man on a beach, then such a general idea can probably be turned into a very attractive cover. However, if you are particular about the details like a woman and a man of very specific ages or hair color, then it may be hard finding appropriate images. This will allow you to pursue the design that can be accomplished attractively.
·         Use Iconic yet simple and strong designs- It is better to be more iconic or symbolic with your cover design. Most of the readers can understand an eye catching yet simple idea quickly. Remember, your book will appear as a tiny picture on a bookstore website. People prefer a simple yet symbolic cover, rather than a complicated or cluttered one. If you are planning to depict a particular scene on the cover of your book, then think again. It can be difficult to craft a specific scene. Further, such complicated designs may not tell potential readers what your book is about. The cover of your book should have the proper context and a particular scene may not depict the same.
·         Never Show Too Much of Your Character -Many writers prefer to show the main characters on the cover. However, generally this is not a very good idea. The majority of readers like to imagine and depict the story and characters. Further, it can be very difficult from a designer point of view as well. In a case where it is important to represent your main character on the cover, you can create attractive cover designs without disclosing the character. You can use an outline of the character or show them from behind or in small parts. Such options will create curiosity for your readers. Remember, pictures are worth 1000 words.
·         Research – You need to invest your time and efforts in research to get good ideas for your book cover. You can visit a bookstore to examine books of the same genre. You can search online even. You can definitely get ideas for your book cover design. If you are planning to hire a designer, then you can clearly portray your idea to your designer.
·         Technical Stuff- When it comes to a book cover design, you cannot forget about a few technical guidelines. The copyright issue is one of the important aspects which you need to consider while submitting images for your cover. Submitting the copyrighted images devoid of permission can create issues in your book’s production. Select the licensed images from websites to avoid potential copyright violation. Big and bold titles, with clear images will definitely help you attract your potential buyers.
·         Never forget creating content on the back inside flaps. Generally, consumers look at the front cover, spine and back and then open the book. Then they like to find more details and pricing.
All above mentioned tips will help you have a great cover design that will depict your vision, while grabbing the attention of all potential buyers.
